What is a DSG Gearbox?
DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) is a specific and highly technical form of semi-automatic gearbox technology. Therefore, an equally high level of expertise and skill is needed to carry out effective DSG car gearbox repairs. A major benefit of a DSG gearbox is that it will shift gears for you electronically.
This technology is essentially made up of two manual gearboxes within a singular unit. Going into further detail, it is comprised of two clutches, two gear shafts and an electronic control unit (an ECU). A normal gearbox will carry the gears with one shaft, however, DSG has the even numbers on the first shaft and the uneven numbers (and reverse) on the second.
The Gearbox ECU is responsible for making sure that both of these shafts work in unison with each other, especially when gear shifting. Not only do these dual-clutch transmissions provide virtually instant gear changes, but they are also more efficient than conventional automatic gearboxes as less energy is wasted transferring the engines power to the wheels.
